Saturday afternoon: rain drums on the window, and the children are already going round in circles. Don’t panic: a rainy day can turn into one of the best moments of the week. Here are ten simple ideas that need little equipment and no screen.
1. A coloring workshop
It’s the great classic, and for good reasons: all you need is a printer, some pencils and a few minutes. Print several coloring pages of their choice, set everything up on the kitchen table with some gentle music, and let everyone pick. Older children will love mandalas, little ones the drawings with big shapes.
2. A story to color
A story book turns the afternoon into an adventure: an adult reads a passage aloud, the child colors the matching scene, then you move on to the next page. Reading time and coloring time answer each other, which is a great way to hold children’s attention for longer.
3. The blanket den
Two chairs, a sheet, a few cushions, a flashlight: a secret hideout! Once built, the den serves as the setting for everything: reading, snack time, a card game or an impromptu nap.
4. Kitchen experiments
Baking a cake, kneading pizza dough, making cookies to decorate: the kitchen is a laboratory. Children measure, pour and mix, and are proud to taste the result.
5. An indoor treasure hunt
Hide small objects around the house and write (or draw) clues. Children who can’t read yet follow pictures. The reward: a snack or… a mystery coloring page!
6. Board games and card games
Rain is the perfect excuse to bring out the board games. For the little ones: memory, dominoes, bingo. For older kids: card games and simple strategy games.
7. A puppet show
Color, cut out, stick on a lollipop stick: puppets in fifteen minutes. Then the children invent a story and perform the play for the family.
8. Crafts with what you have
Toilet-roll tubes, egg boxes, bottle tops, newspaper: recycling makes wonderful materials. A rocket, a castle, an animal… anything is possible with glue and a little imagination.
9. A free-drawing session
Put out a big sheet of white paper and a basket of markers: “draw your perfect day”. No technical instructions, just the joy of creating. You can draw alongside them: it’s contagious.
10. A “stay at the table” challenge
A puzzle to finish together, a big team coloring page (everyone colors one part), a word game… Pick a group challenge that brings the whole family together.
Our tip: make a “rainy-day box”
Keep in a drawer or box: markers, pencils, glue, round-tipped scissors, paper, and a folder of coloring pages already printed. When the rain arrives, everything is ready, and you avoid the dreaded “I’m bored”.
